THE FACTS AND DATA

The scheme will not make cycling safer

  • The current cycling infrastructure is already safe with TfL’s accident data showing that of the 54 accidents, there was only 1 cycle or pedestrian accident on the roundabout, classified as slight.
  • DfT’s Cycle Ambition Study did not find any evidence of improved cycle safety when assessing the impact of new cycling infrastructure in 8 UK cities
  • The number of cycle collisions has doubled in King Street since cycleway C9 was implemented, and the number of serious cycle collisions has tripled.

The scheme is unlikely to encourage more cycling

Less experienced cyclists are more likely to use the existing cycle ways around the perimeter of the roundabout, rather than cross the busy roundabout.

It will create more queues and longer journey times

  • On major traffic routes including Shepherd’s Bush Green, Holland Park Roundabout, Holland Road and the West Cross Route
  • On quiet residential streets
    • Kensington & Chelsea: North Pole Road, St. Ann’s Road, St. Ann’s Villas, Ladbroke Grove and Abbotsbury Road
    • Hammersmith & Fulham: Brook Green, Addison, Shepherd’s Bush and Hammersmith Grove

This is not a bus or pedestrian friendly scheme

Removing 3 traffic lanes will increase congestion and bus & emergency vehicle journey times.

Local shops will face business loss

Customers avoid areas where there is increased congestion or loss of parking, resulting in an immediate and sustained loss in local business and even shop closures.

TfL have not assessed the scheme’s traffic and pollution impact

TfL have based their traffic and pollution assessments on modelling conducted during covid outside of rush hour for a scheme that bears no resemblance to this one – C34, a quieter route in Hammersmith & Fulham that doesn’t go through a roundabout.

The scheme is not supported by local residents

Less than 12% of residents and 30% of cyclists support the scheme.
